Mother Is Arrested in Baby’s Drowning

A Harlem mother was arrested yesterday after her 3-month-old daughter accidentally drowned in a bucket of the mother’s vomit early Saturday morning, the police said.
The mother, Savarin Dejesus, 18, went out last Friday night, leaving her daughter, Niah Ford, in the care of a fellow resident of Fox House, a group home on East 117th Street, according to the police.
When Ms. Dejesus returned, she retrieved the baby from the sitter and went to her room, feeling sick. She set a bucket next to her bed before she went to sleep with the baby in her arms, the police said.
During the night the woman vomited into the bucket, and sometime later the baby rolled off the bed and into the bucket, the police said. The mother did not discover the baby’s condition until she woke the next afternoon about 2:30 p.m.
The baby was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where she was declared dead. The medical examiner said the baby had died of asphyxiation and drowning.
Ms. Dejesus was charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. She was in police custody yesterday.
Employees at Fox House declined to comment on the case.
However, Darlene Fermin, 20, who has friends who live at the shelter, said of the baby, “She didn’t look neglected or anything. She always looked real nice and cute and dressed up for the seasons.”
Christian Medina, 20, who knows Ms. Dejesus from the neighborhood, said, “I guess it was just a big mistake, a stupid mistake, a big, big mistake.”

i think that this is sad. she didnt mean to kill her baby. i dont think she should be arrested for it either. she already has to mourn the death of her daughter. but she is also getting charged for it. fucked up shit. people die of stupid shit everyday. there is no need to put these things on the net or news or anything. why is negetive shit always talked about. why dont people start talking about a new tree that was planted in the community park or some possitive shit.?

who would even of thought of this happening and trying to prevent it ?
Really I think this whole issue is a waist of air. Unless we are going to try and find away to prevent this from happening then why add more drama to our lives.
